NAGYSIMONYI (12 km)

Nagysimonyi is a true highlight of the Kemenesalja territory with an amazing panorama. When the weather is fine, to the east you can see the hills surrounding Lake Balaton, the Castle of Sumeg, and the Kissomlyo hill and when you look in the opposite direction the snowy mountain tops of the Alps amaze you.

The first written documentation dates back to 1237, it was first mentioned as "Symun". In the Middle Ages local nobles were the holders, but later on the Nadasdys, the Draskoviches and the Batthyanys gained parts of it. Rumor has it among the locals that Titusz Dugovics (Hungarian hero: he gave his life to sabotage the occupation of the Caste of Eger) was born here, however no official statement supports its legitimacy.

The village had to surrender to the Turkish in 1549. It was despoiled by German mercenaries in 1567. The first vineyards were planted in 1683. Nagysimonyi alongside with Janoshaza became a center of the local Jewish community. In the cemetery the grave of rabbi, scientist Weisz "Sabtaj" Simon can be found. Sometimes pilgrims come to the grave to throw their wish notes in the crates placed next to the tombstone. The synagogue was built early in the 19th century, it has to be rebuilt in 1892 though, due to a fire. Later it was torn down due to vacancy and a post office was built in its place. The graveyard is separated by the railroad tracks from the village. The first Jewish church speech in the county took place in Nagysimonyi. A First World War and a Second World War memorial were introduced to the public in 1926 and 1990, accordingly.

Sights

In the millennial park, where the First World War memorial can be found, there is also a graveyard for prisoners of war, between Nagysimonyi and Ostffyasszonyfa, north to the village. The construction of the prisoner of war camp began in 1915. In 197 wooden barracks more than 160.000 soldiers were kept in captivity during 4 years. 30 - 40 thousand people could fit in the camp at a time, where electricity, water and channels were provided. The prisoners worked in several workrooms and had their own camp money. Despite the health care thousands have lost their lives due to contagions. The camp was closed in 1919.

The village is accessible via route 84 in the direction of Celldomolk, it is the next village after Sitke.
