SITKE (6 km)

Sitke is village with 600 inhabitants, it is a 5 minute ride away from Sarvar, playing a very important role in the life of the area from the very beginning. It holds plenty of myths and historical ruins. Besides going on a trip the adventurer will run into beautiful natural environment. The bird called Sitke finds its habitat here. It is still not clear whether the village got its name after the bird or the other way around.

Ruins of the Bronze Age can be found around the Hercseg mountain. Discovery of archaeological remains of a supposedly bigger Roman settlement has occurred here also. Archaeologists have found remains of stone houses, an amphitheater and a spa. Some of the experts like to joke around that every single element in the houses, backyards and barns are ruins from the ancient times. In the sixties the inhabitants used the pool built by the Romans as their own spa.

The first records of settlers date back to 1283, who adapted their family name - Sitkey - from the name of the village. Sitke started to develop, by 1479 it has achieved an "oppidium" (agricultural town) rank. Later the village and the family has split into two parts Small and Big Sitke.

Written documentations mention the St. Lawrence church from 1337 and Sitke as a market place from 1427. After the fall of Papa (a nearby town) the locals had to pay tax to the Turkish, in 1567 and 1683 German mercenaries looted here. In 1664 Sitkey György's property was sold to the Esterházy family, in 1698 Esterházy Daniel gave it to Felsőbüki Nagy István. In the 16. century also the Kisfaludy family became a holder, even had a castle in Big Sitke.

Small Sitke was documented in in 1448 in the first place. Its owners were Sitkeys, whose castle was gifted to Pál Nádasdy by the ruling king in 1627. At the end of the century also István Nagy Felsőbüki got parts of the territory and moved here with his family after 1718.
Viticulture has been going on in both villages for hundreds of years.

Two towered Calvary chapel, which have had been built by Sandor Felsobuki Nagy in 1871, in romantic (historical neo-goth) style. The Calvary hill has become famous for its annually held Rock festival. The renovation and maintenance is financed by the festival's turnovers.

The Felsobuki Nagy castle used to be a stronghold surrounded by tall bastions, which have been torn down in the 19th century. It was built around 1730 in a baroque style and was decorated and painted by István Dorfmeister. The castle was redecorated in a romantic style in 1851 and also was extended with a huge basement. After 1945 it served as a school, today it is an inn.

The "City road" starts right next to the parish church, which was used mostly in the Roman times. Every now and then archaeologists still find some ruins from the ancient ages.
